Operation button up is underway.

Him Indoor's last exam is tomorrow. He is a bit of a swot so the chance are he will pass with flying colours.

This means the week-end will now be free to go walking and camping.

This is were the going gets tough. Operation eat less and move more was fairly unsuccessful due to lack of commitment on my part (it was winter, the biscuits tasted so nice and I had this new baking book with recipes which just begged to be tried). I am now to the point were I cannot do the top button on my jeans up - well I suppose technically I can, I just can't sit down when I do.

So on the one hand I am looking forward to try new walks and to see if The Boy is now old enough to learn basic map reading and to try using is brand new compass. His little heart is still set on Snowdon and on redoing the walk in the Brecon Beacons (Fan Foel) we had to abandon half way through last year due to the bad weather conditions. On the other hand the idea of carrying excess weight up a hill fills me with dread.

So far so good. I have actually turned down the offer of birthday cake at work today and swapped pudding with custard for an apple.

Lets hope I don't fall off the wagon too soon or I'll have the embarassement of having to use the little train to go up. Oh the shame.

Not bad for a Bank Holiday week-end

Since we were minus The Boy this week-end (on a visit to The Boy'd Father) we postponed the trip to Wales.

We had a choice to make. Should we A) tidy/clean the house so it becomes more presentable and I waste less time looking for things have misplaced, tackle the Mount Vesuvius of ironing which lurks behind the armchair and weed enough of the flower bed to plant the perenials which are ready in the greenhouse. Or B) get out of the house and enjoy the weather which was frankly not bad for a Bank Holiday week-end.

For some reason we chose B). Funny how some things appeal more than others.

Saturday we took the bikes out and cycled to Kingston (OK the purpose of the journey was a bit utilitarian as it was to get a new iron to replace the one I have dropped a few times too many, but it was nice none the less). The Rugby was on in Twickenham which means part of the journey was almost traffic free and lined with Police officer - a great improvement on risking your life trying to cross the A316. In the evening Kim came for dinner and proved that she is as much of a Tetris addict as us. We all went to bed when we stopped being able to focus which was way too late in the night. How can such a simple came get grown ups so hooked ?

Sunday went swimming with M the new Au Pair in the morning and in the afternoon decided to go for a walk in London. We settled for Little Venice to Camdem Lock via Regent's canal. It's a nice walk and I like the bit accross London Zoo. This time there was a sort of wild boar in the enclosure. It was playing with a big plasic ball, pushing it about with its snout - could have kept me amused for hours. Him Indoors got us moving again. We managed to get to Camdem lock before long. We were hoping to find the Japanese stall which used to sell miso soup and noodles in big bowls for our dinner but unfortunately it is no longer. All we could find were stalls upon stalls selling a greasy excuse for chinese food - not appealing. I do not mind stepping away from the eat less part of the button up plan if it is to eat something nice that I enjoy. I do not want to if it is to eat something that will make me feel bloated and tastes horrible. As usual Him Indoors saved the day. He found a newsagent, flicked through Time Out, directed us to Charring Cross and into Hazuki so M and I got to have our soups with sobba noodles and mountain vegetables (if anybody out there knows what the mountain vegetables could they please advise as I could not identify them and if you know how to make the spinach in sesame sauce please feel free to send a recipe). The food was very pretty, unfortunately Him Indoors would not let me take a picture to share with you, or a picture of the specials menu which had wonderful translation mishaps, pig organs was his favourite and a dish with hormone in the description was mine so you will just have to take my word for it. From Charring cross it's only a short walk accross the bridge back to Waterloo and then home.

Today The Boy came back to us in the morning. After lunch we took a train with Christine and her children to Windsor and walked to the Castle and Windsor Great Park via the long walk, rested under the statue of George the third and came back sing Queen Anne's ride. It was pleasant. The Boy enjoyed the fresh air and I realise I am even more unfit than I thought as my legs were begining to feel a bit tired towards the end. How will I cope on a hill ? How much fitter can I get in a week or 2 ? Hopefully, fit enough.
