Gregory'la fait boum

Tonight while cycling home I witnessed a spectacular fall. A cyclist with no lights missed the pavement and proved the laws of gravity also apply to the young and fit. I stopped to check he was ok. He picked himself up and looked stunned that a) he had been defeated by a curb, b) he was in one piece, c) somebody had stopped. He was young (19ish) and cute. I am not into craddle snatching but I really would not have minded kissing him better.

I knew there were advantages to cycling to work even in the not so warm weather. If I had been driving Iwould have still been stuck in the queue of traffic a couple of lights before and would have missed him altogether.

Blast from the past

You know how sometimes a smell or a taste or a song reminds you of another time and another place. Well so many things had been reminding me of the time when I lived in Lincolnshire I thought I would get back in touch with the people I knew then.

The cues that started my brain on a trip to memory lane: the taste of pumpkin soup, the sound of a VW beetle driving past the house, some supid oasis song I really hate (the really whiny one that goes maybe I don't really wanna know, how your garden grows etc), a mention of the Lincoln Christmas market, a conversation about a flood and the smell of somebody on the tube who was wearing a perfume I have not used for years which reminded me of a night out in London for a birthday party.

A couple of phone calls and I found out the phone number I needed. The first thing they said "I thought about you the other day when we saw some pumkins and I remembered he pumkin soup".

People change very little, well at least the part of them you knew stays with them. Maybe that's why I like to talk to people who have known me at a different time in my life and who understand another side of me which is not the one people in my life today think of first when they think of me.

What always amazes me is how easy it is to pick up from where you left off despite the years. I feel like driving North and seeing the people and the places again.

I am hopeless at remembering names and not particularly good with faces. However I can remember people's food preferences and dislikes for years. An ex-colleague still jokes about the time I brought teas and coffees milked and sugared to everybody's taste without having to ask them first but had to ask him for everybody's name after the meeting to make sure the minutes would be accurate because I did not have a clue who was who.

Pet peeve project.

I take it to be a sign of aging. It only took 2 pints to get me more than slightly tipsy on last night girly outing. A great time was had by all but I woke up with a hint of a hangover and the grey weather did little to improve the bear with a sore head mood.

As an experiment I made a mental note of the pet peeves I was encountering today and I will do the same on a "happy me day" and see if murphy's law dictates that there will be more irritants on a day which started badly or if the numbers are the same and I just find them more annoying.

I am the messiest person you are ever likely to meet. I can turn an immaculately tidy room into an unbelievable mess within half an hour and without even noticing it. It used to drive our first au-pair absolutely mad.

The only thing I ever keep tidy is my kitchen cupboards. I am mildly obsessive about it and when I let it go for a bit it unsettles me a little everytime I cook.

Over the years I have tended to live with tidy people. They have all given up on trying to convert me to their way. They have all developped ways of coping which did not involve me putting things away myself.

It's not that I don't like it when it's tidy, I do really, it's just that I don't mind the mess.

Pet peeve project. Part 2.

This morning was beautiful and crisp and I was hangover free so I was able to do a quick compare.fficeffice" />

Õ    Pet peeve 1: drivers on whose windscreen I want to slap a "nice parking mate, NOT" sticker.

On grey day there was 1 who could not have parked closer to the junction if he tried and blocked the path for pedestrians and the view for road users making a right turn and 5 on the cycle lane (despite the double yellow line). On the bright day only 2 who shouldn't be allowed wheels.

Õ    Pet peeve 2:  people whose command of English varies depending on whether they need something from you or you need something from them.

On grey day: repeat offender turned up and made my day. On bright day she stayed away.

Õ    Pet peeve 3: educated people who cannot fill in simple forms (go in front of a mirror or significant other, then try and say, “You write your name in the box that says name” without sounding patronising and you’ll understand what I mean).

On grey day: 9 offenders. On bright day only 1 and he was good humoured about it.

Õ    Pet peeve 4: people who think I have X-ray vision or a gift for divination. People who think that if they have called me once last year and I spoke to them for the 30 seconds it took to put them through to the correct extension, I will know who they are when they call and say “hi, it’s me”. People who feel they can introduce themselves using only their forename, sorry to crush you illusions but the chances are your forename is not that unusual and the person you are leaving a message for will know more than one Dave, Mohammed, Sarah, Dilpreet etc…People who feel they have to call every number which comes up when they miss a call or dial 1471 – no I do not know who called you – if it’s important they will call back or leave a message on your answer phone.

On grey day:  every other caller between 4 and ffice:smarttags" />5 pm. On sunny day: only 2.

I expect such a small sample would not be representative statistically speaking. However I am now satisfied that grey days are not just rubbish because they are grey. They are bad days full stop.

Public appology to Him Indoors

I am truly sorry I was a f*ckwit and a squirrel monkey. Thanks for loving me regardless.
