The Boy is back in town The Boy came back Sunday afternoon. He was in one piece, rosy cheeked
from the Wiltshire countryside fresh air and tired. His first words on returning home were "did Daddy record Dr Who?". Once the important stuff out of the way he told tales of walking around a castle, going to sleep at 10pm, having 4 helpings of spag bol and 3 helpings of shepherds' pie, playing on haystacks and looking for eggs. The mum who had gone to see them perform on the Sunday morning said they did really well, sang very nicely and all remembered their words. He wants to go again next year. |

What a difference a couple of weeks make On Monday after seeing The Hitchhiker' Guide to the Galaxy
(enjoyed the film very much - I am the human equivalent of Marvin minus "the brain the size of a planet" of course) the weather was just begging to be enjoyed so we went to sit by the river with drinks in our hands in Hammersmith*. The cherry tree on the green which would have been sporting glorious white blossom only a week or 2 ago had a bit of a neglected look about it. Today I swapped pedal power for a bit of walking and took another close look at the trees which line my route to work and while most people would admit that a couple of weeks ago they would have been worthy of hanami (have a look below and and you'll see what I mean), today they were more of a sorry sight. Then again, on closer inspection, each brown and shrivelled bloom is being replaced by shiny green promise of fruit. Not such a sorry sight after all I suppose. *By we I mean some of the usual blogging suspects - Adrian, Pixeldiva, Chz (who unfortunately had to leave us early), Neil, Annie Mole and one of her non-blogging friends. |

Birthday boy No birthday party this year. Instead we to The Boy to Coral Reef in
Bracknell for the afternoon. It's the sort of wimming pool where you don't do any swimming, it has 'rapids', a giant jaccuzi and 3 slides. Him Indoors and The Boy enjoyed the fast slide very much and after testing the other shoots decided I could probably handle the medium speed one and insisted I gave it a go (I did). To round of the day we went to Starvin Marvin in Perivale and back in time for ice cream in front of Doctor Who. One hapy little boy and no tidying up after the party that did not happen - the best of both worlds. |

uplifting Isn't it funny how small things can make me really happy. Today my
Grandfather called me, for no other reason than wanting to hear me. Its a rare occurance, he finds the idea of calling abroad daunting (in a "what if I dial wrongly and somebody answers who only speaks English sort of a way"). We did not have any particular news to share, he wanted to check everything was ok our end. We talked about my Mum, about my cousin, about their 12th great grandchild due in November. Simple everyday family stuff yet it warmed me more than any amount of giggly juicy gossip could. Ah well, simple things please simple minds... |

What colour is your anorak? Contrary to popular belief at work, the day off I took yesterday was
not to go to a job interview (hold the disappointed sighs please). It was to attend his: ![]() Here's how it went. First the competitors met outside Oxford Street station The starting point was drawn out of a hat (by the previous tube challenge record holder) - St James Park. The competitors then did their best to travel all of zone 1's tube station in a record time so they get to the pub as fast a possible and enjoy a few drinks and be merry. Oh yes, I nearly forgot, they also wanted to know how well they and the other teams had done. And the winning team who came all the way from Sweden for the event was handed a trophy (somehow I appear to have no pictures with both Håkan Wolgé and Patrick Silleu - sorry Patrick) When the pub finally opened the function room upstairs the competitors moved on to serious things like drinking, comparing routes and preparation, selling cds (Anthony Smith's - stand on the right please of course), discussing further challenges, joking, talking, taking more pictures... A great day, but don't just take my word for it, go read Geoff's account of the day, or Annie Mole's. I expect Tube Guru will have an update soon too. As for me I am thinking about the design for next year's cake of course. |
