Exhange House

On Sunday I returned to exchange House, this time accompanied by Chz
who had agreed to fiddle with the settings on the camera for me if I
lost patience with it again (yes i am still struggling with it when not in
automatic mode). The resulting pics are available on Flickr tagged Sunday15thJan.

The last time I had seen the building I took a quick snap
of the front of the building because the steel structure reminded me of
bridges and forgot about it until Him Indoors handed me a copy of an
article about it making me think it might be worth another look (it is
not that nice a building but the way the structure is put together and
stands on the outside of the walls is unusual). After all the article
confirmed my first impression and pointed out the building is leterally
suspended above the tracks leading to nearby Liverpool Street Station.
Of course the fact it is within walking distance of Vietnamese
restaurants, that I am often guided by my stomach and that Chz doesn't
appear to mind the "indecisive woman meets long menu" moments too much
had nothing to do with the choice of destination for a Sunday morning
stroll. Anyway here's the science bit.

To
avoid the tracks, the foundation piers were placed on either side of
the rail network, giving rise to a clear span of 78m in between. (...)
The most striking feature of the design is the use of four segmented
parabolic arches - two internally and two externally - to span accross
the railway tracks.

Cullinary concept brought to you by The Boy: chocolate flavoured carrot cake. I don't think it will catch on somehow.

Guess who forgot to put the memory card back in their camera before putting it in the bag when they took Him Indoors and The Boy to the Kew Bridge Steam Museum?

A good reason to go back I suppose, that and maybe the need to have another look at the collection of inventions (on display until 14th April) so I can decide which is my favourite. I think my dad's would be the moustache saving soup spoon.

*Edit: yes I know we were meant to be sorting out The Boy's clothes so that I can work out how much needs replacing because there is a chance school will start reporting me for neglect if I keep sending him in with trousers which ride over his ankles and school jumpers that need to be pulled hard to stay below the belt line (ok honestly more like to stay just below the belly button) but I am easily distracted and when it's a choice between looking at steam engines and sorting out a wardrobe it's easy to work out which is going to win in my house.

I had a conversation a whlie back with a fellow blogger about music and what makes a good song and the importance of lyrics vs music. I like music but I find it harder to warm to instrumentals that songs with lyrics. I like lyrics, not so much the meaning of them but the way the words can match the rythm of the music. I guess it comes from years of having to learn poems by heart at school as a child (I can still remember most of them sadly enough yet I can't remember my own mobile number). I admit sometimes the meaning plays a part, and a verse along with the music can capture the mood. I also saw a meme recently which asked for a number of song titles whose lyrics one knew by heart, so many of them I couldn't even start to list them.

Anyway here are 5 sets of lyrics from songs currently on my most played list on my ipod. Feel free to guess the titles and artist an to add some of your own, even if you are a music rather than lyrics person yourself.

  1. Well I love you so dearly ; I love you so fearlessly; Wake you up in the mornin' so early; Just to tell you I got the wanderin' blues; I got the wanderin' blues; And I don't wanna leave you; I love you through and through.

  2. Ce soir-là on s'est embrassés sans se parler. Autour de nous, le monde aurait pu s'écrouler. Les yeux cernés, des poussières dans les cheveux. Au long de mes jambes, la caresse du feu.
  3. This is not what I'm like, this is not what I do.This is not what I'm like, I think I'm falling for you

  4. There's nothing to be gained by; Running all these bad times through your head again; Stomach's ablaze with hellfire; But don't you know that these things always end the same

  5. But the side of you they'll never see; Is when you're left alone with the memories; That hold your life together like; Glue
