I blame the library of course. They have this way of displaying titles that might tempt the lazy browsers like me, those who just happen to wander through the aisle rather than look with a title or author in mind. There it was, on display "Andean Folk Knits" , calling my name. Book duly checked out. It's full of information and pretty patterns. I could just flick through it, maybe read more about alpacas , knitted coin bags and how men knit chulos using needles fashioned out of bicycle spokes to opbtain a gauge tight enough to protect from the mountain winds and then return the book to the library. I could, only it would be sensible thing to do, I could but I don't. Instead I flick through and get to page 98 and think, "oh I keep meaning to try double knitting , this is just perfect". Before you know it I have put the book down, rummaged through the stash to find some suitable yarn (not luxury soft yarny goodness since my stash is more "Hounslow Littlewoods closing down sale" than UK Alpaca but a sensible wool rich tumble dry 4 ply) and goggled for a set of more adequate instructions on casting on for double knitting than those in the book. Now I am 6 rows into the project I know this will probably join the pile of UFOs, I find 1-1 ribs tedious at the best of time, this is pretty much the same (knit 1 purl 1) only with 2 thread that insist on twisting themselves for added annoyance. It is slow going and the tension is trixy. I know I won't finish it, yet I sit down here and there adding a few stitches to the project as a delaying tactic for all things housework. Incorrigible. I guess I'd better take the book back to the library before I start on a llama shaped bag I'll never finish. Update: It *must* be a really boring project. I have given up already for the night and got out the rubber gloves to start the washing up.
Why do I do this?
