The Boy has found a way of spending his birthday money. It involves gluing little models of fantasy creatures, decorating them, learning some intricate rules of engagement and battling on a table top with similarly minded character owners. Before he can start playing all the characters need to be put together and while I have seen people play with plain base-coated unadorned models The Boy is adamant that he couldn't do that. Somewhere in his little 10 year old rather scatty little brain lies a strong sense of what order things should be done in. His models have to be painted first, play is for later. Fair enough. He has sat through the lessons at the shop. He has also worked out that if I help him paint them he can start playing sooner, he is no longer satisfied with my current contribution which is limited to spray painting the black base coat on (spray cans, solvents and 10 year olds didn't seem a good match in my head for some reason). Today I purchased some extra brushes and under the guidance of The Boy I painted my first space marine. It was rather cute to se him take on his serious face to tell me not to load the brush so much and every so often "you are doing well". Anyway considering I was somebody who once sat at parent's evening in front of an art teacher who just laughed when my mum asked how I was doing (and considering the quality of the work I had produced I couldn't even blame her or call her mean for it, it WAS consistently bad, not even the option to put it down to "not having found my medium yet" like a very kind friend once put it), I don't think I did too bad.
The skills the parenting books don't tell you you need to play Mum

Violet / Website (6.10.07 19:26) Well now! That's a mighty good looking.. uh.. little man-guy-thing! He looks.. umm.. fierce? Scary? Red! Yes! He looks red! Seriously though, I have no idea how you managed to paint something that tiny without ending up screaming and tossing the little thing out the window.

Philippa (17.10.07 12:46) Ah I think we may be headed that way too! He walks by the shop, looks at the window but has not made it into the new dark and scary world. I know one day he will and I will have to remortgage my house to pay for his addiction! I hope I don't have to paint the things. You are supposed to stuff them up - it is like ironing mens trousers. Then you don't have to do it again!! |
