After a couple of glasses of wine the conversation moves to the blue screen of death.

- That's why I love my mac.

- It crashes less?

- Not really but you get the little wheel. *quizzical looks fron a couple of people in the room* It's a little circle divided in little portions and it spins.

- Ah *much nodding* and?

- It's basically the same as the blue screen of death only it's prettier.

I wonder if Him Indoors would accept it as a valid argument for buying me a mac?

The wheel's infuriating, but Macs do crash a lot less.

Heh. Not in my hands they don't. The last time someone handed me their PowerBook saying how it never crashes, it was down in about 5 minutes. I have the magic touch. =) That was MacOS 9, though. I hear they crash about as often as Windows XP does now. That is, very rarely.
I bluescreened Win2k a few times due to a crummy IDE driver, haven't managed to make XP die yet. Give me time.

We managed to make a BSOD screen saver once. So, everytime someone left their computer alone for more than 5 minutes, it BSOD'd.. well, atleast they thought it had.
Hours of amusement had *L*

Fimb - top quality entertainment. When I was at MAFF my mate hacked the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen (which you never see these days) so it read "It is NOT Safe to turn off your computer". That was hilarious till the Head of IT saw the number of User calls he got about it....
Anyway Strops, you don't want a Mac you want a cape, surely?

Bear in mind you can now buy a Mac that dual boots into OSX or Windows...
I've been using a Mac Mighty Mouse with my sony via now for the past week .. so i'm slowly being assimilated.
Win XP is still quite easy to crash, and I've only ever managed to make a mac die once - quite by accident.
I think Macs are like fine wine. And Windows like lager. As you get older, you slowly convert as you appreciate them more...
And I think this is the most comments you've had for a while strops! :-)

Oink: hello, hope you had a good time with the kids in London
Fimb/Jiiim: This very much appeals to me.
Jiim: my cape is at the shop for its MOT.
chz and geoff: nobody can crash a puter like a techy - something to do with ascerting dominance over the machine methinks?
Geoff, next thing I know you'll be fixing my stats just so you can keep tracks ;-)

Normally you'd be right, but I still haven't manged to crash XP yet. I did venture over to our one local Mac user and managed to crash the OSX desktop just by using it (which I can do nicely for XP as well), but I think it's a lot harder to crash the underlying system without purposely trying to.
And given that I am a unix guy after all, I'm sure I could crash it in 0.3 seconds if I were trying. =)
Like fine wine - it goes off quickly if you actually try and use it. Looks pretty if you leave it to sit there, though. (Okay, I like Macs - they're just *outrageously* priced on the desktop and merely a bit dear for the laptops)

Is it going to rain then? Well, we do need it, water rationing and everything.
